About Sales Tax Calculator Online

This tool calculates sales tax — also known as VAT or GST in many countries — on a purchase. Enter the pre-tax price and the tax rate, and the calculator returns the tax amount, the total price including tax, and the breakdown.

Sales tax rules vary widely. In the United States, rates differ by state and city, ranging from 0% (Oregon, New Hampshire) to over 10% in some localities. In the EU, VAT is typically 17-25% and built into the displayed price. In Canada, GST plus provincial PST/HST applies.

The tool can also work in reverse: given a total price that already includes tax, it extracts the pre-tax amount and the tax that was added. Useful when you have a receipt and need to log the pre-tax cost for accounting.

How to use this tool

How to calculate sales tax on a price

  1. Pre-tax amount

"Pre-tax amount" is the listed price before tax. Use the currency you'll quote the total in — the tool returns a number, not a formatted price.

  2. Tax %

"Tax %" is the rate as a percentage (e.g. 8.875 for NYC, 19 for German VAT, 5 for Canadian GST). Combined state+local rates work — just sum them yourself first.

  3. Press Run

Result returns taxAmount (amount × tax% ÷ 100) and totalWithTax (amount + taxAmount), each rounded to 2 decimal places.

  4. VAT vs sales tax

Most US sales tax is added on top of a tax-exclusive price. Many EU VAT prices are already tax-inclusive — for those, divide rather than multiply (use markup-calculator-online's inverse approach).
